Launched in 1999 by the Citizenship and Public Administration Program (Programa Ciudadanía y Gestión Pública), a joint initiative of the Universidad de Los Lagos and the Innovation and Citizenship Corporation (Corporación Innovación y Ciudadanía), this award's goal is to certify and publicly recognize innovative experiences in citizen participation, systematically document them, and provide the academic and public sectors and civil society organizations with a body of potentially replicable innovations, so they can understand their characteristics and learn from their contributions.The Web site www.innovacionciudadana.cl contains nearly 1,900 experiences, 150 of which are highlighted.The data bank includes experiences in diverse fields, including socio-economic development, land-use planning and environment, infrastructure and public services, health and social services, education and culture, administration and government, justice and public security, and management and civil rights.
Evaluation criteria involve verifying the extent to which the experiences contribute to and innovate in enhancing citizenship and building virtuous bonds between the state and civil society.
The methodology for identifying experiences consists of the following steps:
Knowledge creation in local administration occurs mainly through events and seminars to disseminate information, the experience bank, publication of a book of documentation, case studies and thematic research.
